What is IRS form 2290?

Form 2290 is a Federal Excise Tax that is imposed on heavy trucks that operate on public highways. Any truck that weighs 55,000 pounds or more is subjected to this tax. Although all the trucks have to be filed, only the trucks that will be used for 5000 miles or more are taxed. The federal tax is collected annually and is utilized for the construction and maintenance of highways.

Other terms for referring Form 2290 also include Truck Tax, Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) and Highway Vehicle Tax.

Tax Period:

The tax period begins from 1st July of the current year and extends till 31st August of the succeeding year. You can receive your stamped Schedule 1 copy for 2018-19 from 1st July 2018. The deadline for submission of your HVUT for the tax year 2018-19 is 31st August 2019.

If you’ve used your vehicle for the first time in the current month, then IRS HVUT must be filed within the last day of the following month. If you’ve used your vehicle for the first time in March during the tax year 2018-19, then 30th April 2019 is the last day to file your IRS form 2290.

Requirements to File IRS Form 2290:
  • The VIN (Vehicle Information Number) and EIN (Employer Identification Number)
  • The gross weight of the vehicle
  • Name and address of the business
