What is HVUT?

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or HVUT is a federal tax imposed on vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The taxable gross weight is the actual weight of the vehicle that is fully equipped for service without load. The HVUT is paid using Form 2290 which can be filed electronically through an IRS approved e-filing provider like eForm2290.com

You can determine your heavy highway vehicle use tax amount using our 2290 tax calculator.

What is the due date for filing HVUT 2290?

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is due on August 31. For a newly purchased vehicle, Form 2290 due date is the last day of the month following the month of the vehicles’ first use.

For example, if your vehicle was first used on a public highway during the month of July, then you need to file your Form 2290 between July 1 and August 31.

The tax filing period begins on the 1st of July till June 30th of the next year. If you have trouble calculating your due date, you can use our highway use tax due date calculator.

Partial payments and penalties

Tax evasion has dire consequences. The penalty for late filing is 4.5% of the total tax due, assessed on a monthly basis up to five months. Late filers will also accrue a monthly penalty of 0.5% of total tax due and an additional interest charge of 0.54% per month. The IRS can put you out of service for non-payment and can prosecute you for tax evasion.

If you have difficulty paying your taxes, you can get in touch with the IRS to request an extension on your tax payment. In your request, you need to explain the reason for the delay in paying HVUT. Note that the extensions granted will last no longer than six months.
